    I wonder how you can assume a result made by computer-generated computations (using JavaScript) ensures a comment is written by a humain being. All your plugin does is to ensure one uses a browser to post a comment. Say I develop a Firefox plugin to spam your blog. Your plugin won’t be able to stop it.

    Moreover, what happens if a visitor has deactivated JavaScript in his browser? What would happen if the user is behind a proxy server? I guess visitors won’t be able to comment in both cases…

    You are right about the first part. Yes, someone can use a browser to spam. But do spammers do that? Won’t it considerably slow them down? No plugin is foolproof. Spam and anti-spam tech evolves constantly. For *now* this works.

    Yes, it clearly does require JavaScript. But, about 94% users have JavaScript enabled as of Jan 2007 (source: http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp). That number is likely more now if you notice the trend. For me its a choice between using a captcha and inconveniencing 100% of my visitors or <6%.

    No, proxies don’t matter (unless the proxy filters out JS).

    BTW, thanks for your comments. If you have any suggestions please do let me know.

    It looks like you got your idea and the name of your plugin from WP-SpamFree. Also you have copied most of the text in the bullet points of your description from that plugin as well-almost word for word. You need to be careful because that is a DMCA violation. With GPL you have to give attribution for code,but you can’t copy marketing text or descriptions.

    Not true, in fact I first saw WP-SpamFree after I had completed the plugin and was writing a description (not very good at documentation, I was looking what other similar plugins had written). After reading WP-SpamFree’s feature list I couldn’t write mine another way since both plugins essentially offer the same advantages. But you are right, that’s a terrible thing to do in the age of DMCA (though I am not a US citizen :) ) and I’ll reword my feature list in the next update.

    The idea is not really the same either. My plugin uses time-based hash (generated on the server side) and JavaScript (AJAX) while WP-SpamFree uses JavaScript and cookies. If you look at the code I am sure you’ll find no similarities there either.

    Anyways, thanks for looking at my plugin and I hope you’ll still give it a try. Criticism (constructive or otherwise) is always welcome :) .

    Hi!

    Your plugin is very promising, but it doesnt work together with Better Comments Manager.

    Could do you make your plugin compatible with it? (maybe make some check about if the user is logged, and if logged no need to make hash check).

    Just downloaded and ran your plugin and got this error:

    So far it has been great, and doing a great job of picking out tags. Any chance that this plugin can do it to all post automatically?

    Hi There,

    I installed the plugin and noticed that my comment spam levels dropped to zero. This is great! However, I tried to post a comment on one of my posts, in response to some elses comment, and noticed that the form would not sumbit. When I clicked on the “Post Comment” button, it turned into a “Please wait” and then just stopped. The comment never got posted. I tried several times with the same result. When I de-activated the plugin I could post comments again.

    Any idea what might be causing this? Anyone else experienced a similar issue?

    Thanks,
    Stephen

    Hi,

    After installing WP 2.5-RC2, I’m getting an error on the auto draft save function that appears to relate to your plugin.

    The error is:

    If this is your issue, as it seems to be, would this be something you can fix easily enough?

    Peace,

    I wanted to add a new wrinkle. That error appears only on the initial auto save of a draft post. On subsequent auto saves, after I do a full save of the post, there is no problem. I hope that doesn’t make this all the more difficult for you to figure out. :D

    Yeah, I’m using the basic editor, and it works now :) It does return pictures with © All rights reserved, so I would recommend to others to check the photos they are using before posting to make sure the only use CC photos.

  52. Stefanie
    Posted March 29, 2008 at 12:26 pm | Permalink

    So I edited it to only include CC licensed images, if anyone is interested.

    In decoratr.php, near the bottom, change this:

    $api_key=’6833ce889f21fffcaa88f2aaabbea4f4′;

    $request = “http://api.flickr.com/services/rest/?api_key=$api_key&method=flickr.photos.search&format=json&tag_mode=all&per_page=$count&sort=$sort&$mode=” . urlencode($keyword);

    to this:

    $license=’1,2,3,4,5,6′;
    $request = “http://api.flickr.com/services/rest/?api_key=$api_key&method=flickr.photos.search&format=json&license=$license&tag_mode=all&per_page=$count&sort=$sort&$mode=” . urlencode($keyword);

  53. Stefanie
    Posted March 29, 2008 at 12:27 pm | Permalink

    Oopsie. Don’t delete the api_key code, just add license after it, like this:

    $api_key=’6833ce889f21fffcaa88f2aaabbea4f4′;
    $license=’1,2,3,4,5,6′;
    $request = “http://api.flickr.com/services/rest/?api_key=$api_key&method=flickr.photos.search&format=json&license=$license&tag_mode=all&per_page=$count&sort=$sort&$mode=” . urlencode($keyword);

    I have been getting the same errors as Gene, the solution was fairly simple. I added these lines to auto-tagger.php and it seems to work for me…

    if ($results['ResultSet']['Result'] == “”) {
    return $tags;
    exit();
    }

    Just find….
    129. $results=unserialize($response);
    130. $tags=array_merge(explode(’,',$tags), $results['ResultSet']['Result']);

    and change it too…
    129. $results=unserialize($response);
    130. if ($results['ResultSet']['Result'] == “”) {
    131. return $tags; exit();
    132. }
    133. $tags=array_merge(explode(’,',$tags), $results['ResultSet']['Result']);

  56. Posted March 30, 2008 at 8:50 am | Permalink

    Okay I made a small typo in my code, sorry guys. instead of “if ($results[’ResultSet’][’Result’] == “”) {” on line 130 you need to put “if (if (!is_array($results['ResultSet']['Result'])) {) {”

But additionally, in IE7.0 anyway, you’ll see an error icon in the status bar, double click the icon and a message box pops up with the error message. Browser settings will also affect when and if you see the errors in the page.

    Plugin Author: There appears to be two distinct problems, 1) errors displayed when saving posts and pages, 2) clicking the auto tag button doesn’t add the tags.

    I installed this and it works with no problem. 2 things, though.

    1) When getting images from Flickr, is this tearing up my bandwidth?

    2) When you click an image, the link goes into your text area, but there is really no indication that it has done anything. It would help if, after you click, you see a message or something visual telling you that the link has been added to your text area. I thought it had done nothing until I scrolled back up to my editing area and saw the link had been added.

    I’ve installed Captcha-Free on my blog, running WP 2.5.1, when a comment is posted, you just get forwarded to Google, for some reason, and the comment isn’t posted?!

    http://hintofsarcasm.com is the address, any ideas?

  83. Posted April 29, 2008 at 11:24 am | Permalink

    I installed this the other day, and it’s fabulous. I’m getting more comments than I was with the often faulty, always irritating captcha software I was using before. Just one thing, though. People who use AOL’s browser are getting an error when they try to post: Invalid data. Please go back and try again. Any thoughts I can pass along to them, or are they SOL?

    On my wordpress 2.5.1 clicking on suggest tag closes the window and saves the suggested tags to the article. I expected suggestions I can approve – not a forced add.

    Anyway, the plugin is a great idea – I really hope you polish the code so it works with the 2.5.1 Version …

    This plugin looks neat for sure, although I would STRONGLY advise only returning creative commons images.

    I’ve had plenty of my images stolen for use on other websites and blog posts with out my permission. While the technology you made is nice, cool, etc. it is NOT cool to use other’s photos w/ out asking for permission.

    All it takes is a simple flickr / email and it might cost nothing to get approval. I’ve allowed my photos used for non commercial use. I DO require proper link credit (to my website, not just to flickr)

    Thanks,

    I have placed their email address in the settings box along with mine separated by a comma.

  160. Just My Life
    Posted September 22, 2008 at 11:18 am | Permalink

    I think I found the problem, after looking on my server it seems that the plug in sends emails as wordpress(AT)yourdomain.com in my case it was wordpress(!AT!)justmylifeingeneral.com

    Since that user did not exist on my server, it would delete all emails or just not send them along their merry way. I created that user so it would have a mail box and presto it’s works for me. It would be nice if that was changed so the admin’s email is the one that was sent or someway to change besides poking around in the code.

    Thanks,
    That Guy

    Hi,
    I’m a little confused how the auto tagging works. Does it just do it, or do you have to do something? I have it activated but don’t see any other settings panels for it.

    Thanks!

    Hi there,

    Great plugin and I appreciate it very much. Have a question though – is it possible to have some words/phrases to be excluded from being used as tags?

    I have some not very HTML literate guest posters, and currently my most popular tags are “Rsquo” and “Nbsp”. Would love to get rid of those without manually editing posts, pleeeease.. :)

    Thanks a lot, Misha

    Your other theme might not support tags. IIRC, the tag enable your theme you have the insert the function the_tags() in your theme.

    This plugin is great, but can be greater :) Could you add following two functions?
    - I have blog where everyone can register and post. Some people marks posts as ready for review, some don’t. When I review these posts, I delete ones which are not suitable for my site. Could you add option to notify author when post in draft or pending state is deleted?
    - my blog is in Polish, so I would like to send emails in Polish too. Could you add options to configure email’s text?

    Daniel,

    Glad you liked the plugin. The plugin already has options to send approval and rejection emails to the authors. I’ll try to add an option to customize the messages in the next version.

  183. Posted November 8, 2008 at 8:06 am | Permalink

    Thanks for quick reply.

    The plugin sends emails when I approve post or move it back to draft state, but it doesn’t send emails when I delete post in draft or pending state completely instead of approving it. I would like to send emails in this case too. I had looked a bit for available WP hooks and found that deleted_post hook should be appropriate for this.

    Just tested this out in 2.7 – and it’s working perfectly!

    Only one question/request – is it possible to have it send out a notice that a post is published on “scheduled” posts?

    For example, a contributor submits a post for review on 12/17. I review the post on 12/17 and schedule the post for publication on 12/19 at 8:10am. Is there a way for the plugin to notify the contributor on 12/19 at 8:10am that their post was published?

    Ok, you have been busy, thank you for the quick fix and reply. Just have a new problem now that didn’t happen before the update, I am using the language plug qtranslate that ads the lang locale in the address field, so as in
    domain.com/nameofcat default lang
    domain.com/fr/nameofcat postorcat in French
    domain.com/de/nameofcat postorcat in German

    So it now removes the /fr/ or /de/ from the url, not good, I understand if this is out of the scope of the plugin, but it would be really nice to have this back, as it was if you see what I mean…

    In the FAQ for the plugin, it says that the category will have priority over the page, whereas on this page it says that the page has priority over the category. I want the category to have priority for the exact reason mentioned in the FAQ, so that I can have them appear in my navigation. Is there a way to set the category to take precedence?

    @Derek: The category will have priority. If it says otherwise somewhere its a mistake, let me know where and I’ll fix it.

  269. Posted April 5, 2009 at 2:42 pm | Permalink

    The category isn’t taking priority on my installation. It is pulling up the blank page instead of the categories, though the categories pull up fine if I change the page slug.

    Two categories with matching page slugs
    - http://derekperkins.com/seatability1/news/
    - http://derekperkins.com/seatability1/news/press-releases/

    Two categories without matching page slugs
    - http://derekperkins.com/seatability1/news/distributor-updates/online/
    - http://derekperkins.com/seatability1/news/press-releases/

    I do have the Redirection plugin installed, but I have checked multiple times and I have removed all references to my category / page slugs to remove any interference. I also tried deactivating it and I still encountered the exact same problems. Is there something else I should check?

    Thanks for the prompt reply.

    I actually took my website live with those problems still active, so replace the links above with derekperkins.com/seatability1 with seatability.com.

  272. Posted April 6, 2009 at 9:44 pm | Permalink

    I’m having the same issue as Derek. If I have a page and a category both called News, with WP No Category Base active, the page currently takes priority. I would prefer the category to take priority.

    My workaround is to alter the page slug and set a redirect (Page Links To plugin) to the category name. However this creates unsatisfactory permalinks for subpages.

    WP 2.7.1, latest No Category Base, latest Atahualpa theme.

  273. Posted April 6, 2009 at 9:48 pm | Permalink

    @Shannon: I definitely agree with the ‘unsatisfactory permalinks for subpages’ comment. I can work around it for sure, but if the category can override the page slug as it is supposed to, that works perfectly.

  274. Posted April 7, 2009 at 9:23 am | Permalink

    The plugin works great however it does not redirect previous permalink w/ category base to the no-category base permalink .

    This will hurt PR.

    example;
    I want to automatically redirect…

    http://sitename.com/category/cat-name/postname

    …to…

    http://sitename.com/cat-name/postname

    Great plugin works well apart from if you have a category that currently has no posts in it, it just shows a 404 error, whereas when its not installed wordpress will just say no posts in this category.

    Hi there. Thanks for a great plugin. Just what I was looking for. There is one issue I can’t resolve.

    I am setting up my blog and I have a user called Dummy1 to help me test things. When Dummy1 submits a post for review, I get the email OK but there is no link to click on to approve the post without having to log into my admin account.

    From what I understand in reading the plugin description, the plugin will show me the contents of the post and provide me with a link in the email to approve the post without having to log into my admin account (this is what the plugin ‘Change Comment Status’ does for me when dealing with comments). Is my interpretation correct? If so, why isn’t it working for me? Please give me some ideas as to how to fix it.

    Thank you very much.

    I absolutely LOVE this plugin-there has been NO spam since I started using it.

    However, the last few days, I’ve noticed it will sometimes throw an “invalid data” error when a legitimate comment is submitted. It *seems* to be related to the use of ellipses (… at the end of a statement) but I’m not 100% sure.

    Using Wordpress 2.7.1, with the latest version of Captcha Free.

    Any ideas?

    Hi there. I would like to thank you for a great plugin. There is one thing I can’t get it to do.

    Is it supposed to send an email with the post’s content and a link to approve the post without having to log into the admin area? Because if it does, I can’t get it to work. I am using WP 2.7.1.

    All I get in the email is the author’s name, the title and a review it link.

    I use Comment Changes Status and it allows me to click on the approve link in the email and the comment is approved without me having to log into WP. I was hoping that your plugin would do the same thing but for Posts.

    Please help as I would love to use this plugin.

  303. Posted April 25, 2009 at 11:56 am | Permalink

    Hi, I have installed this plugin on a website I am designing and have run into a small issue regarding category feeds.

    It seems to be working fine on all pages but when I set up a feed eg http://www.mysite.com/beta/category/category-name/feed/ it gets re-directed to just
    http://www.mysite.com/beta/category-name/

    Now could this be because of the fact the site is under a beta filename?

    If not is there any fix for this? I have read comment above stating there were problems with category feeds but you said the latest version there is a fix for category feeds.

    Any help you can give would be much appreciated. And great plugin!
    Thanks.

    I really like the look of this one. There is just one problem. The faded text on the papyrus makes it very hard to actually read what you have written in the blog and in the menu bar. :( else I would have used it, but what good is this if people cannot read the words you have written due to a background that disturbs the flow for the eyes?

    So does it or does it not work when showing subcategories?

    The problem is that it works perfectly if you show a link with a category. It does not work if you show links with subcategories. I have my permalink set as /%postname%/ and wondered if it has to be: /%categories%/%postname%/ but that didn’t work either.

    Problem is that only one or the other works. If you get it out of the URL, it works everywhere but subcategories. If you put in the category slug, subcategories will work but other areas will not.

    Has anyone got all of this to work? If you have, what are your settings.

    nice plugin, but there seems to be a bug in the code whereby if there are more 2 or more forms on a page, and if multiple forms have a ’submit’ element id for the submit button, then the 1st form will get submitted instead.

    so, if the 1st form is a search box, it will submit a search query instead of the comment form.

    to solve it, change: document.getElementById(’submit’).click();

    to: document.getElementById(’commentform’).elements['submit'].click();

    First, awesome plugin. Exactly what I needed.

    A minor problem. It seems that capitalization makes a difference. For example, these will yield different results:
    http://www.spacevidcast.com/sts-127
    http://www.spacevidcast.com/STS-127

    It would be awesome if case didn’t make a difference as technically people should spell out STS on our site, but realistically many won’t. Anything I can do on my side to change that behavior?

  335. iDope
    Posted June 15, 2009 at 1:24 am | Permalink

    @Mike Tommasi: The problem with that is your URLs will have a period in them.

  337. Posted June 15, 2009 at 8:46 am | Permalink

    @iDope, not 100% sure. I know that WP categories always want to be lower case, but check out this example (where both work but go to different places):
    http://www.spacevidcast.com/sts-125/
    http://www.spacevidcast.com/STS-125/

    So WP can see both cases and guide them to different locations, but it can’t seem to do the same thing for both cases.

    I have the same problem as others. It works only for regular links to remove “category” but if you have a sub cat and subcat, it removes the word but you get a page not found error. e.g.

    cars/audi/1980/

    and then it will list all the car articles from the 1980 audi. That category list gets a page not found. I could never get any of these category removers to work with WPMU, ever. I wasted weeks on this. Glad to try it again and see but that was my original problem.

  350. Posted June 18, 2009 at 7:51 am | Permalink

    I can but I’ll simply tell you since I have to turn it off… who knows, maybe it is an httaccess, conflicting plugin, but it didn’t work when I tried the first time. I will install it on my new blog and test.

    mysite.com/vehiclesblog/cars/audi/

    What will happen is that links will be rewritten as the above instead of this:

    mysite.com/vehiclesblog/cateogry/cars/audi

    The problem is the above link yields a 404 error with the plugin. The link is rewritten properly but the server doesn’t know where it is. However, if you type in the URL as above with category in it, the page works for wordpress. Using the plugin it is ONLY in that usage.

    Let me as you this – do you need to have anything as the baseurl? Right now I have nothing there.

    < if ($new_status == ‘pending’) {

    > if ($new_status == ‘pending’ && $old_status != ‘pending’) {

    Will this new updated version solve the subcategory issue that is stated above? The problem is that the two category level still yields the category word in the URL. I’m wondering if this isn’t solved and, if not, how neat it would be to be able to change it like, e.g. from category to “car” or something like that. I haven’t used it on here but you’ll see what wordpress does with this site. Implementing the plugin causes the nonfunction in Mike’s posts.

    Hi,

    thanks for the plugin.

    I have problems with WPMU and BuddyPress.

    1. Some categories get 404, i don’t know why.

    http://www.apfelcenter.de/reviews/software-reviews/
    http://www.apfelcenter.de/reviews/hardware-reviews/

    2. Blogs of Wordpress don’t come in. they’re catched by rewrite rule and are searched for equal categories. I use the subdirectory method of WPMU.

  368. iDope
    Posted June 26, 2009 at 3:26 pm | Permalink

    @halk: The software-reviews category is displaying fine. The hardware-reviews category is giving a 404 possibly because there are no posts in it (which is the default Wordpress behavior).

    The links below bypass the Wordpress url rewriting engine (and hence this plugin) and should work weather the plugin is enabled or not.
    http://www.apfelcenter.de/?category_name=reviews/software-reviews
    (works, as does its rewritten version)

    http://www.apfelcenter.de/?category_name=reviews/hardware-reviews
    (404, indicating that either this category doesn’t exist or it has no posts)

    Missed the second part of your question. In MU, are you copying the plugin to the ‘mu-plugins’ folder or the ‘plugins’ folder? Plugins copied to the mu-plugins folder do not require activation and hence their activation hook never gets called. This is what updates the cached rewrite rules initially. However it is easy to refresh the rewrite rules just by visiting the ‘Permalinks’ page in the Wordpress admin.

    This great plugin DOES work but only for main categories. It does not work for subcategories – that’s the problem I’m having. It’s really great but when you add it in for subcategories they break. I’ve unfortunately confirmed this at least in MU. I’ll see what happens in regular MP but I’m guessing it is the same.

  384. iDope
    Posted July 5, 2009 at 1:21 am | Permalink

    If your MU is using sub-directory based blogs that might cause a problem as that changes the path. It works fine with sub-domain based MU blogs (which I use).

  385. Posted July 5, 2009 at 11:33 am | Permalink

    Subdomain is different than subdirectory. I hesitated to use subdomain due to SEO and the fact that finagling with subdomains can complication many things, at least from what I saw. Personally I think it would be a nice way to break things up on my site but not sure it’s worth the potential SEO hit for content on a site. But I digress – it just doesn’t work with sub-subdirectories, two levels.

    /carsblog/audi/204sg/

    This breaks and leaves page not found.

    First, for anyone doubting this plugin, it works exactly as it says. Brilliant!! It worked from the beginning, and I didn’t even have to clear my cache.

    Unfortunately, I had to deactivate it. :(

    My website has 2 pages that are a big focus. I currently have 2 main homepage posts redirecting to these pages. Long story, but to easily do this, I have created a category for each of these 2 posts. This plug-in gives the category priority over the page as it says. I didn’t find this to be a problem for me until I was finishing my testing. If this isn’t a problem for anyone, I recommend it to you.

    iDope: Is there a way for me to make the page have priority over the category when both the page and category have the same name?? Or do you have plans for the next version to allow the user to select what they want to take priority?

    Thanks for your time.

    Actually, if you (or anyone) can advise me how to easily redirect a specific category to the specific page (while using your plug-in), that should be a good solution to my issue. I really love this plug-in and want to use it.

    Please help!!

    This plug-in works in some instances but falls down in others.

    Kudos to iDope for building it, but there is a FAR, FAR simpler way to do this in the “Permalinks” page in your wordpress back-end

    All you need to place in the category base field is a period. JUST ONE SINGLE, SOLITARY PERIOD!!

    Go and try it!!

  393. iDope
    Posted July 9, 2009 at 4:20 am | Permalink

    @Jamie: Please let me know the cases where it fails for you.

    The period workaround does work but that adds a period to all your URLs kinda defeating the purpose.

  394. Jamie
    Posted July 9, 2009 at 7:18 am | Permalink

    @iDope

    I found it unable to affect the links as provided by my theme – perhaps i was setting it up wrong, i don’t know

    The period doesn’t add a period to the URL. I was expecting it to, but it really doesn’t!

  395. iDope
    Posted July 9, 2009 at 7:42 am | Permalink

    @Jamie: Let me know the link to your blog.

    You can’t see the period when you mouseover the link as the browser automatically normalizes the link (’./’ is treated as the same directory on most file systems, i.e. ‘/’). If you view the source of the page the periods in the links will be visible (and they will be visible to search engine bots as well).

  396. Posted July 9, 2009 at 2:28 pm | Permalink

    Love the plugin, but there seems to be no way to stop it from auto tagging when I update a post. If I delete tags I don’t want, they just get added again next time I save the post. Don’t seem to be able to remove unwanted tags at all.

    Hello iDope,

    thanks a lot for the beautiful plugin…. Its working fine for me….

    I came across this page searching for “Invalid Data: go back and try again” error…

    I am not getting the error in ur plugin but in “Wordpress Threads Comment” plugin…
    In that plugin I had enabled AJAX support. I tried to debug and found that it works fine till displaying the messsage “submitting comment……..” But after that the xmlhttprequest.status = 500 instead of 200. Do you have any idea about where it is failing ?

    As soon as i deactivate the plugin , all works fine and visitors and post comment.

    Also point is that if I am logged in as Admin and try to post the comment, it works fine. !!!

    Most of the comments on that plugin with the :Invalid data…..” problem are unsolved and unanswered :(

    It would be very kind of you if u could just guide me….

    thanks a lot….

    Your plugin removes more than the category-base, which makes it incompatible with multilanguage plguins that ad a locale indication to the URL (e.g. /pt/ for portuguese etc). I use WPML, and i have tested locally to come to this conclusion.

    Any chance you would take a look at the issue soon? Your plugin is a blessing multi-lingual sites can’t have!

    iDope, thank you!

    This plugin is amazing, and adds something to wordpress that I have been wanting for many years now.

    I remember searching long and hard about 2 years ago for something like this.

    Just activate, and it works flawlessly, you have thought of everything!

    Many thanks for the great plugin! Keep up the great work.

    The only problem is if you name the same name title of a category and a page. Wordpress will go nuts which one will be displayed.
